The Indianapolis Radio Club Founded In 1914 The oldest continuously meeting Amateur Radio Club in the United States The club was founded in 1914 and has met continuously since. The club is now a general Interest group that meets on the second Friday of each month, except July and August. The meetings start at 7:30PM followed by a program of interest to all. Programs cover a wide variety of interests; operation, technical subjects, talks by prominent Amateurs in our community as well as from other groups. Each December; the club hosts a dinner at which we present an award to the hard working amateur for Outstanding service to the Indianapolis Amateur community. We are currently meeting at the Indianapolis Training Center at 2820 N. Meridian. There's an amateur radio station in the center, which our club helps supply and maintain. Please attend our meetings and bring a guest. The AMACHEWER NEWSLETTER for November 2004 _______________________ Next Meeting: Annual Meeting and Dinner on Friday, December 10th , 2004 to be held at the Southside MCL Cafeteria, 3630 S. US 31. We will begin gathering at 6 PM TIME. The program speaker will be Sharon Oliver from the Eiteljorg Museum. Club President Chuck Crist, (W9IH), called the meeting to order slightly early at 7:20 PM, due to several important matters that were to be voted on during the business meeting. Chuck thanked the ITC for providing the pre-meeting coffee and cookies. The IRC provided Soft drinks & Donuts. New Life Members: Don Hemenover (N9DOO) was awarded a Life Membership by the club at the last meeting, but was absent due to a work assignment. He was asked to stand and accept the award, which was based on his contributions to the club as Station Trustee, his many years of providing help to club members and projects, and classes he has taught over the years. Also, Bill Goodall (K9DBY)& Dave Miller (K9RTT); signed up for Life Memberships, Ed Dixon (KB9RPB); and Ken Poe (K9POE) renewed memberships at the November meeting. Thank you! -Businesss meeting called to order. A reading of the minutes from the last meeting was again postponed due to the absence of the club Secretary, Maria (KB9RLG). The club Treasurer, Tom Chance (K9XV), reported income of $45, and expenses of $56.48 during the past month. New Club Members: Gary Lane, (KC9GEC); Bill Beam (pending); and Tom Frank (N9GQH) applied for club membership. Tom Price moved and Ed Conder (N9IZN) seconded a motion that these proposed new members be approved. The motion carried unanimously. Motions Concerning Annual Meeting Meal, Annual Dues, and Life Membership Fees: The following motions were voted on and passed by the members present: 1. The club will pay for one meal for those members who attend the Annual Dinner Meeting in 2004. 2. The price for an Individual Membership will be $15/year, beginning in 2005. 3. The cost of a Family Membership will be $27/yr. Beginning in 2005, and will include two (2) Annual Dinner Meeting meals, if meals paid by club. 4. The cost of a Life Membership in the club will be $150, beginning in 2005. Election of IRC Officers for 2005: Election of Officers was held and the following slate of officers proposed by the Nominating Committee were elected: President: Chuck Crist, W9IH Vice-President: Dave Miller, K9RTT Secretary: Mike Henney, KE9YA Treasurer: Tom Chance, K9XV Chief Operator: Trevor Fulk, N9YM Board Member: Joe Labraico, K9OOA Board Member: Paul Bohrer, W9DUU Furthermore, Don Hemenover, N9DOO, has agreed to serve another year as trustee for the IRC club station and license, in the event that he is asked to do so by the new IRC President. -Business meeting closed... After this business was completed, the well-attended club meeting quickly moved to the less formal agenda items reported in this newsletter. Health and Welfare: Bill Goodall (K9DBY) is in St. Vincent’s Hospital North (W. 86th Street). Max Kennedy (W9EHY) is in declining health. N9FOZ has Moved to Florida! David E. Thomas (N9FOZ), formerly located at 4354 N. Arlington, Indpls, 46226, has moved to Florida. an update on his mailing address listed on QRZ can be expected, due to his station license address change. Dave was quite active in IRC in the late 80s and early 90s. He also was the main driving force behind the ham directories which were published at least twice and possibly three times. I have 1990 and 1993 copies on hand which are still useful but becoming more obsolete with each passing year. (Information supplied by Ron (W9YZ) ) IRC November Program: Mike Sercer (WA9FDO) delivered the IRC program on the topic “Broadband Transmission Over Power Lines.” A topic of interest to both new and experienced hams alike. Monthly Club Awards: The monthly club DX award and trophy for November was won by Roger Lowary- W9BZ , 20 meters - Antartica . The monthly traveling club trophy for the longest distance QRP contact was won by Steve Wendt- KB9RDS ,17 Meters - UK, again,. Likewise, the Digital club award for the contact over the greatest distance was won by Bob Osterhous-W9PSE,20m for a contact with Antarctica. Tom Price (WB9UNG) won a new club award—the Mentor Award— for assisting four newcomers to amateur radio in attaining their radio licenses over the past two months. The annual awards committee has met and there will be presentations at the December dinner meeting ! Hamfest and Special Events Calendar -Greenfield Hamfest: December 5, 2004. Club Hats Still Available: In celebration of the IRC’s 90th Anniversary, club hats with an embroidered club logo are available for purchase for $20. The articles seen by this reporter were tan baseball style hats with black lettering, and appeared to be very well made. If you wish to purchase one of these handsome hats, be sure to come to the next club meeting and bring some extra money! You will be helping to support your club if you buy one of these hats. Amateur Radio Classes: -The Red Cross of Indianapolis Radio Club is well into a 10-week class for prospective amateurs. See the IRC web site (www.indyradioclub.org) for more details. -A Radio Study Group has been meeting at 10:30 AM on Wednesdays at the McDonalds at 116th and I-69 to discuss questions and answers on amateur radio. They are currently beginning code practice and studies leading to the General License. Two in the group passed their Tech exam at the Bedford Hamfest. Another member of the group has passed his Tech Plus exam, and most recently passed his General License exam. The newest member to join the group is a former ham who has just passed his Tech Plus exam. For more information, contact Tom Price (WB9UNG) at 849-6550. Door Prizes: A number of fabulous door prizes, including another Sears Frequency Counter, a portable radio mounting bracket, lots of RG8 cable, an HT case, a small screwdriver and nut socket driver set, and other prizes and were distributed to randomly selected members of the IRC who were in attendance using a timeless classical prize gathering and distribution algorithm perfected by Bob Osterhous (W9PSE).
